Travis Kalanick, the former CEO of Uber, made it clear on Wednesday: He believes that the company’s decision to give up his autonomous driving program was a mistake. Said Kalanick on the Frequency summit In LA, “Look, [new management] Killed the autonomous car project we had. At that time we were really just behind Waymo, but probably to catch up, and we would give it up in a short time. . . I did not run the company when it happened, but they could say: “I wish we had an autonomous ride product product at the moment. That would be great. ‘”
Uber sold his self -driving unit in a reported Fire sales to the self-driving tech developer Aurora in 2020, three years after Kalanick was forced to do so resign. At that time it made sense; Autonomous driving was bleeding money, and Uber had already spent hundreds of million dollars for the effort. Now the self -driving cars from Waymo in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, Phoenix and appear in new markets.
Waymo recently partner In Austin with Uber and Uber, its platform sets the growth of the service. But business has stuck business and partnerships. If Waymo decides that it does not need a middleman, Uber could be in reverse seasons as soon as the future of transport.
