The Alfred Cyclone will bring harmful winds and heavy rains to the east coast of Australia when it touches land as a storm of category 2 at the end of this week.
It is the first cyclone that reached the region from the Zoe Cyclone in 1974. Tropical storms are not uncommon in Australia, but generally touch more north.
