Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach: strategic analysis

Tonight, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis (30-0, 28 KB) defends its title WBA Lightweight against the featherweight WBA Lamont Roach (25-1, 10 KB). A familiar opponent he has faced several times in amateurs. The familiarity between the two gave excessive Gardon confidence, believing that he is the one who defeated tank. He left to say that he can and eliminate Tank out. Can he defeat the most efficient Power Puncher in sport?

The reservoir is a very economical punctuating launching an average of a total of 32.2 punches per turn, which is the second lower of boxing. It may have a low production, but surprisingly, it has one of the highest connection percentages in sport at 48.2%. His precision makes him a difficult opponent for anyone. It is an extremely patient boxer who knows when to throw and how to throw his punches. In his latest fight against Frank Martin, he allowed Martin to take an early advance by allowing him to launch at will while tactically planning his counterattack. Although Martin won tricks on dashboards, it was by design. Tank’s strategy against Roach will be very similar.

Roach’s only defeat was against Jamel Herring in 2019 when he was surpassed by Herring in a technical boxing match. Herring exceeded the Gardon 143 to 84 and seemed to have dropped Roach on the ninth round, but received a favorable decision from the referee, who judged a shift rather than a Knockdown. Since then, he has won six consecutive victories, winning the WBA Super Featherweight championship in the process against the former opponent of Chars Hector Garcia. Lamont has improved considerably since this loss and seems determined to continue his race against Tank. This will prove to be extremely difficult. Although he may have weighed heavier, at 135 pounds for the 133.8 of Gervonta to obtain a tactical advantage, he is the smallest fighter in terms of power. How will he adapt to faster and stronger davis? If Roach is faithful to his word, he will be aggressive and will put pressure on Gervonta, this will allow Tank to counter. If Roach decides to play safely, boxing with an in-And-out movement, tank will time and catch it inside.

The herring was effective against Roach to land several counters on the right, something that Tank can reproduce this evening. The tank is too fast and too strong for the Gardon, and it will present itself early.

Boxers always take time to adapt to a new division and even more against a Power Puncher. Roach has an insurmountable task to face an economic and effective puncture. If he is unable to withstand tank punches, it will end very early.
