The extreme right -right populist Calin Georgescu, who came from nowhere to win the first round of last year’s presidential elections, has been arrested by the Police and faces criminal procedures for a series of positions.
Georgescu was arrested in traffic in the capital, Bucharest, on his way to register as a candidate for new elections in May, after the Constitutional Court annulled the second round of the second round last December.
Prosecutors said one of the charges involved tried “incitement to actions against the constitutional order.”
Two right -wing populist festivities said they were mobilizing their supporters to go to the prosecutor’s office, where Georgescu was taken to interrogate.
The police were seen erecting barriers around the building and hundreds of protesters gathered to protest.
Prosecutors said Georgescu was also being investigated for giving “false information, false statements” and to establish an organization with “fascist, racist or xenophobic characteristics”, as well as to form an anti -Semitic organization.
The severity of the accusation could jeopardize Georgescu’s offer to be executed in the presidential elections on May 4 and 18.
They have put it under judicial control and have told him not to leave Romania, according to the reports. When he left the prosecutor, Georgescu told supporters that they would continue to fight and that “there was no difference between communist mentality and system (which collapsed in 1989) and now.”
The original presidential vote was canceled before the second round last December, after the then president, Klaus Iohannis declassified intelligence documents that suggested that hundreds of Tiktok accounts had been activated that they supported Georgescu.
Romanian foreign intelligence said Russia had been behind the move, as well as thousands of cyber attacks and other sabotage.
Iohannis had decided to remain in office until a successor was elected, but resigned earlier this month before a vote of political trial.
Opposition politicians had accused IOhannis at that time of an antidemocratic movement, and the Georgescu communications team repeated the claim against prosecutors.
“Where is democracy now?” They published on Wednesday, labeling President Donald Trump, Elon Musk and the United States vice president JD Vance.
Earlier this month, the American vice president accused Romania of canceling elections based on “straight suspicions” of Romanian intelligence and the pressure of his neighbors.
Romanian Foreign Minister Emil Huzeanu accused Elon Musk of a “form of interference” in the Romania elections, after the billionaire registered several messages of support for Georgescu.
Georgescu’s hopes to run for the presidency can end up in the Constitutional Court, which prohibited another pro-Russian candidate from the last right last year.
The decision to reject Diana Sosoaca’s candidacy due to her views was widely criticized in Romania.
Romania is a vital part of the NATO eastern flank, in addition to being a member of the European Union.
Calin Georgescu has been accused of being pro-ruso and has praised the fascist and nationalist leaders of Romania of the last century as heroes.
He denied that he was “the man from Moscow”, in an interview of the BBC last year, but referred to Vladimir Putin as a “patriot and leader” while pointing “I am not a fan”.
Meanwhile, the Romanian police said they had carried out raids in several counties throughout the country, pointing to 27 people as part of a criminal case related to the creation of an organization “with a fascist, racist or xenophobic nature.”
Investigations were also carried out in false statements on the sources of financing of the electoral campaign, police said.
The statement did not mention Georgescu himself and it was not clear if the raids were linked, however, he said he was fighting a security system “that loves us in slavery.”
