The day began with the same cordial routine of White House reserves to visit foreign dignitaries.
The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, was well received by the president of the United States, Donald Trump, at the west wing gate with an honor guard, and the leaders gave their hand politely.
We were in the oval office as part of the Ukrainian media group, witnessing the formalities well rehearsed and approximately half an hour of educated conversations.
Zelensky introduced Trump the championship belt of the Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk.
Trump congratulated Zelensky’s clothes.
Until now, so diplomatic.
But minutes later, what broke out had no precedents, to say at least. The great tone became acrimony and chaos. The voices rose, the eyes shot, the sprinkles thrown, and all in front of the world’s television cameras.
The president and vice president of the United States rebuked the visiting leader, accusing Zelensky of not being grateful enough for the support of the United States that has suffered the war effort of Ukraine.
Tensions exploded when Vice President JD Vance told Zelensky that the war had to end through diplomacy.
What kind of diplomacy, Zelensky replied.
When talking about the Ukrainian president, Vance told the visiting leader that he was “disrespectful” for him to come to the Oval office and present his case in front of the US media and demanded that he thank Trump for his leadership.
The journalists in the room observed with open mouths as an extraordinary exchange followed.
“You’ve talked enough. You’re not winning this,” Trump told him in a moment. “You have to be grateful. You don’t have the cards.”
“I’m not playing cards,” Zelensky replied. “I am very serious, Mr. President. I am the president in a war.”
“You are playing with World War Tres,” Trump replied. “And what you are doing is very disrespectful with the country, this country, that has supported you much more than many people said they should have done it.”
Vance replied: “Have you said ‘thanks’ once this whole meeting? No.”
Ukraine ambassador to the United States watched his head in his hands.
The atmosphere had completely changed, and all outdoors.
Our American colleagues commented that they had never seen anything like that. “A scene like this was simply unimaginable in the White House,” one told me.
As the reporters left the oval office, many stopped in a shock state. In the Information Room of the White House, where the exchange was repeated shortly after, the rest of the media that had not been in the room observed disbelief.
Confusion occurred. There were immediate questions about whether the planned press conference would continue, or if the long -awaited treatment between the United States and Ukraine about mineral resources would be signed.
Minutes later, Trump wrote in Truth Social that Zelensky could “return when he is ready for peace.”
The press conference and the offers firm ceremony were officially canceled, which will take place in the East Room of the White House.
Shortly after Zelensky he went to a SUV he expects, while his ambassador attended him.
They departed when the world was just beginning to digest an extraordinary moment.
Despite the complete argument, there may be a mineral agreement sooner or later.
But one thing is safe: this visit of Zelensky will be remembered for completely different reasons.
The world saw firsthand how negotiations between the United States and Ukraine develop: they are difficult, emotional and tense.
It was clear that this was a difficult negotiation for both parties.
The Ukrainian boxer’s gift Oleksandr Usyk’s Belt certainly did not save the situation. And after this fight in the White House, the real question is now what this means for the war in Ukraine, and the future of Zelensky.
