The company has had to stop offering mass compound medications, but some consumers can still access custom doses if it is clinically applicable, Dudum said.
“That was one of the first things we share with Novo is that we will always fight in the name of what consumers believe they have the right to obtain,” Dudum said. “The regulation is very clear.”
During Food and Decorated Medicines Administration ShortagePharmacists can legally make compound versions of brand medications. Case may also occur when medically necessary for a patient, such as when a pill cannot be swallowed or are allergic to a specific ingredient in a brand medication.
But drug manufacturers and some health experts have rejected the practice, in large part because the FDA does not approve composite drugs.
The largest composite pharmacies and regulated by the federal government that make copies of bulk semagglutidate without recipes face a legal deadline of May 22 to stop marketing and sell those versions. The smallest and graduate composite pharmacies in the state that manufacture semaglutidal imitators for individual recipes had a deadline of April 22.
“The spirit of this is that we stay faithful to what the rules are,” said Moore. “That is the best way to serve patients.”
