He New York State Assembly On Tuesday, he approved a bill that would legalize the medically assisted suicide for people with terminal diseases, sending the measure to the state Senate.
The Medical Aid Law in Death approved the Assembly by an 81-67 vote. The measure would allow a mentally competent adult who received six months or less live the option of receiving lethal medications.
The sponsor of the bill, assemblyman Amy Paulin, said she was motivated to present the legislation after her sister died of ovarian cancer.
“I don’t know if he would have taken advantage of this medicine if he had the opportunity, but I can tell you that when he died, he was not there,” said Paulin, a Democrat, to journalists, according to the New York Post.

Assemblyman Mary Beth Walsh, a Republican, said “each life has value” when arguing against the proposal.
“Progress may not be in a straight line and will look different for each of us, but this idea of surrendering and dying is not excelsior, always up. It is incredibly sad,” he said, referring to the motto of the State, “Excelsior” which means “always up.”
The leader of the majority of the state Senate, Andrea Stewart-Cousins, said she discuss the bill With the senators, but she did not say if she would mention it to vote on the floor.

“The conversation had seriously begun last year. So I think we have time to look at it seriously,” he told reporters.
It is not clear if Democratic governor Kathy Hochul would sign the measure if he approved the state legislature.
There are 10 US states with suicide assisted by a legalized doctor. Several other countries, including Canada, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands, have also legalized assisted suicide.
