Last December, I admitted that there was a huge hole in my faith.
I grew up painting cartoons, I got the ap art in the Gymnasium and was always fascinated by the hand animation…
But I had He never saw a single second from any Ghibli Cartoon studio!
Ghibli Studio is Disney’s Japanese equivalent, with Hayao Miyazaki as the Japanese Walt: The studio has won many academy awards for their beautiful handmade movies and Miyazaki has reached the legendary regime to make these films to make these films the last 40 films. + years.
Fortunately, the stunning community on the issues gave me hundreds of support comments and helped me decide which movie I should start!
Ever since I made this announcement, I have attended All Movies 20+ Studio Ghibli; fell in love with JapanAnd he became an endlessly fascinated with Hayao Miyazaki.
(My favorites are spiritually away, my neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s delivery service, heart whisper and wind rise.).
After watching every movie, I watched a documentary on Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli because I had to learn more.
Thanks to these documentaries, I have a fascinating look at Miyazaki’s creative style and experiences to make these movies with his colleagues.
The joke was funny was that Miyazaki is the “endless man” and does not seem to retire.
There was something that showed me in every documentary:
In The kingdom of dreams and madness, At one point all the employees in the Ghibli Studio got up and moved to a series of mobility and Kalainic exercises, including Miyazaki.
Later in the document, I noticed Miyazaki showing a very deep occupation in perfect form and without help. How many people do you know in the mid -1970s who can perform an auxiliary deep occupation!?
In Independent of man: Hayao Miyazaki, Miyazaki is filled many times cutting wood with an ax in the backyard of his studio.
And to Hayao Miyazaki and The HeronMiya-san (his nickname), now in the 1980s, is still out of the wood cut, goes for walks in the woods, climbing over fallen trees, doing his office exercises and hard at work that will peak.
(Yes, I know Miyazaki also has a cigarette in his mouth for almost every minute every documentary! He’s lucky to have not developed lung cancer yet and I remind me that it’s not the perfect image of health!).
I bring this because I think it shows a different side of exercise than we normally look at.
Watching this Hayao Miyazaki document remaining active and maintaining his brain sharp in the 1980s …
I reminded me of this Amazing post by Elizabeth (@Thisgirllifts on Instagram):
As we age, it is easier for us to move less, which gives us less energy and makes it harder to find momentum and mobility to continue. This can prevent us from spending time with our family or friends because we are not able to concentrate energy.
Teddy Roosevelt once said “let’s put up the risk of swelling from the rusty”.
In other words: Use it or lose it, bub.
It is not a stretch for me to imagine that Miyazaki’s ability to be an “endless man” is not only due to good genetics (and luck), but also because he has actively chosen to worry rather than rust.
Reflecting on why he chose to push himself to complete another animated film in his 8th decade on this planet, he just replied that this was all he knew how to do: “I would like to die to do this rather than die to die I don’t do anything. “
At Nerd Fitness, we encourage all the guerrillas to think of “Big Why:”
Why deal with the exercise and building new habits and push yourself to raise your life when the sofa is confused?
What is the point of practicing yourself and learning to deal with discomfort when you retreat is easier and so fascinating?
A truly powerful “big because” can help us to stay in the goal especially when life turns into a fire or we want to abandon.
For Miyazaki, he decided that “the” dependence of what is in me “is a worthy use of his time. enough to stay alive enough to do these things!
For my gramma (who I visited the hospital last month), its purpose is to support its community and to help those around it. Her stay active allowed her to do it well in the 90s!
If you are struggling to find a reason for the reason to do something…
You can do worse than “training for my old body”. This is the only body you take and the only life you take, so today is as good for one day and every one to start treating your body with a little more respect.
It doesn’t have to be dramatic. We can simply start:
It is for us to keep our body active and wear is better than rusty than lack of use.
As a chaotic creator who spends a lot of time on my head, Hayao Miyazaki gave me a lot to think:
I hope when I am in my 80s, I still write this newsletter and help people, cut wood and go for walks and spend time with loved ones.
I know I can’t control what’s going on and accidents happen and so much from life is out of my control but I will do my best to give myself the best opportunity to continue to create and wear out rather than rust !
I will leave you with the final excerpt from Miyazaki that closes the documentary Hayao Miyazaki and The Heron:
“Stop whining and moving.”
Now, if you forgive me, it’s time to train for my old man!
-Steve
PS: The original Japanese title for The boy and the heron is How do you stay?. This is a much more interesting (and suitable) title for the movie. It is really the encounter of the work of his life, those who influenced him and his deeper thoughts on the meaning of life.
